What a summer. How bloomin’ good has Britain been this summer?
The weather may have got in the way of a few things this summer and given some festivals a few issues but the summer of 2012 will live long in the memory for all the right reasons and The Paralympics closing ceremony was an uplifting finale. It is easy to be sniffy about Coldplay but they were magnificent, celebratory and clearly were proud to be involved. Seeing Matt Fraser come on and play the drums was a brill and how lovely is Rhianna’s new page boy haircut and that orange outfit will hopefully have inspired a million teenagers that covering up can be the coolest way to dress! We are not sure that Jay Z brought much to the party but with so many disabled athletes having spent their formative sporting years customising their wheelchairs, and with Britain leading the way in ‘up-cycling’ the Steampunk theme was spot on and continued the devoutly creative and anti corporate feel of London 2012. Seb Coe to lead the country? Yes please and in cohorts with the President of International Paralymic Committee Sir Phillip Craven he of the warm Lancashire twang…we can continue dreaming.
Britain has proved that it can be a country that is welcoming, modern and provides the opportunity to shine. We can put on a magnificent spectacle with wit and panache, wonderful, sustainable architecture and create a magnificent legacy for the community. The transport worked, the security was light touch, the staff and games makers courteous and full of joy, the weather just right. The amazing Team GB proved we punch way above our size in so many ways and do it with all the right values.
WOW!
